The Enigma

So I’m dog-sitting for friends in a small town in England, about an hour train ride out of London. In a town close to me is a place called Bletchley Park, that my friends mentioned is where the German communication codes were broken during WWII. From this first mention I had a desire to go there, believing that God would speak to me while there, giving me some sort of key, or understanding or insight that I had never seen before. Since this town was also a location of a church service I wanted to attend, I decided to make a full day of and do both.

Walking from the train station (I now feel like a pro!) I was expectant for the few hours I had set aside to explore Bletchley Park. I bought my entry ticket and wandered through the grounds of this old country estate that during the war became a place of incredible importance and top-secret tasks, performed by thousands of men and woman in shifts around the clock. After spending a few hours here I was mentally overwhelmed with the process of deciphering messages and breaking the code. The Germans were continually trying to make their code more complex and unbreakable and each day’s coding system was different than the day before.

In then end, the British were able to break the code and shorten the war. At the end of my time I had learned a lot about the code, the war, the codebreakers, but did not hear God speak anything to me. So honestly, I left a little disappointed because my expectation was not met.

The next night however, while falling asleep, God spoke to me about Bletchley Park. Resounding in my mind I heard:

I am the Lord God. I do not change. I am the same yesterday, today, and forever. My sheep know My voice. My sheep hear My voice. I do not make myself hard to understand, I am not the author of confusion.

The next day as I was playing this over in my mind I wondered what the name “enigma” meant, knowing that this word was chosen because it was ripe with meaning. I looked online for the definition of enigma:

a person or thing that is mysterious or difficult to understand

Immediately a portion of a verse from the Bible came to mind, so I goggled it’s location (I use google all the time for this!), it was Romans 1:20

For since the creation of the world His invisible attributes are clearly seen, being understood by the things that are made, even His eternal power and Godhead, so that they are without excuse.

God makes Himself clearly seen, He is the opposite of enigma and also of what the Germans were attempting in the war. He does not continually change how He speaks with the intention of keeping us in constant confusion.

God speaks, it’s up to us to listen to His voice, and then to obey His voice.

These are the verse references for what God spoke to me (all in NKJV):

  • For I am the Lord, I do not change. Malachi 3:6
  • Jesus Christ is the same yesterday, today, and forever. Hebrews 13:8
  • I am the good shepherd; and I know My sheep, and am known by My own. John 10:14
  • My sheep hear My voice, and I know them, and they follow Me. John 10:27
  • For God is not the author of confusion, but of peace. 1 Corinthians 14:33
